When I started out as a beginner farmer, I read a couple of articles on the web about how liquid paraffin is important to day-old chicks and other growing chicks. I thought and confused liquid paraffin for kerosene and fed my first chicks with kerosene. I had no problem with my chicks but the effects would have been slowly discovered if I had continued administering the kerosene to my chicks.

There is a huge difference between the paraffin (kerosene) that is used at home with liquid paraffin. Although both are petroleum products, liquid paraffin is the one that is supposed to be used by farmers on their chicken. Do not make the same rookie mistake that I did!

The best way to administer liquid paraffin is to simply add it to the chick water once a day and keep changing the water after every eight hours.

The correct liquid paraffin dosage is the one provided to you by your local agro veterinary. Personally, I give my chicks an average of 4 ml per quart of water.
